On September 30th, our class scholars broke into groups based on the research they felt that they wanted to do. They used technology and discussed with their groups on the research, note-taking, and deeper understanding process. Some scholars started creating power-points and graphs based on their research. Our scholars will not continue to conduct their research, take notes, and continue their project using their academic skills and world knowledge.
On September 23rd, our class scholars started to plan how they are going to begin their Service Learning project to help the homeless in their community. They came up with amazing ideas like designing their own fundraiser to raise money for food and essentials for the homeless. Some talked about sewing blankets for the homeless. Others talked about food drives for the homeless, and serving food to the homeless at shelters. Some talked to raising awareness about our homeless problem with the use of posters and flyers. Others talked about writing a speech and creating a video for Beaverton's Mayor, to raise awareness to the situation. Our Scholars will now conduct research and start on the process of how they are going to complete this Service Learning project using their academic skills and world knowledge.
On September 16th, the class scholar stars of Miss Munoz's classroom decided to take on a service learning project, and through careful discussion, problem-solving conversations, and much thought, the scholars voted to take on the Service Learning Project of helping the homeless in their community, using their STEM and academic skills to do so. The scholars are in charge of the entire project, with only guidance and support from myself and their families. Families, I ask of you to NOT try and help your child discover ideas, and try to NOT give them answers and save them from this struggle. The scholars will be able to problem-solve, research, create, design, build, and enhance their knowledge and education while persevering through the obstacles together as a team. Our job as their teacher and their families is to question them, support them, scaffold them, and to let them push through any struggle they may encounter. I cannot wait to see what becomes of this project! I will update families each week on what next steps scholars have achieved or planned each Friday!
